A Bit of Background
The Patwardhans of Miraj hail from Kotawade, a small village in the Ratnagiri district, in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. Their ancestors joined the Peshwa and served as generals in the Maratha Empire. After the treaty of Wasai signed by Bajirao II and the British. All the Sardars (Generals) came together and signed the treaty of Pandharpur with the British and were made sovereign rulers.
During the rule of Bajirao I, the Patwardhans with their courage and valor coupled with their skill for warfare and political aptitude were able to make a great impact in Hindustan. They established themselves as the greatest fighting Brahmin family in the Maratha army, controlling south India.
